FLORENCE U. MITTINO
FLORENCE U. MITTINO (Age 87) Of Stafford County passed away Thursday, October 13, 2016 at her home. Mrs. Mittino was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Triangle. Crowned "Ideal Secretary of 1950" upon her graduation from the Washington School for Secretaries, Florence spent her early career working for the Department of the Navy. Soon after, her career took her to the U.S. House of Representatives where she served as executive secretary to a variety of elected officials and the Majority Counsel of the House Ways and Means Committee. Upon retirement in the early 1990s, Florence was finally free to devote her considerable talent and energy to activities close to her heart, including the Volunteer Hospice of Fredericksburg and, later, the Aquia Evening Lions Club, organizations devoted to serving those in need. Survivors include her husband of 35 years, John A. Mittino; daughter, Mary Louise "Sandie" Markland and husband, Peter of Kill Devil Hills, NC; step daughters Janice L. Mittino of Alexandria and Patricia Ann Brown of Annandale; three grandsons Michael Vincent Markland of Brevard, NC, Stephen Brown and Christian Brown both of Annandale. She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Louise Underwood, and her sister, Helen Louise Bausch. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday, October 16 at Covenant Funeral Service, Stafford Chapel. A visitation will also be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, October 17 at St. Francis of Assisi with a Mass of Celebration to follow at noon. Burial will be at a later date.
