Richard (Dick) Brandon
Richard (Dick) Brandon March 24, 1923 - October 2, 2016 Salem - Pastor Richard D. Brandon died at Tierra Rose Care Center in Salem, Oregon, on October 2, 2016, after a brief illness. Richard resided in and went to school in Portland, Oregon, until enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943. He taught Air Corps radio operation and maintenance until discharged in 1946. In 1944, he and Elizabeth (Beth) Ruth Schumacher were married in San Antonio, Texas. From 1947 to 1962 he was employed as a Telephone Engineer for Pacific Northwest Bell Telephone Company in Salem, Oregon. In 1962 he, Beth and their five children went to the Papua New Guinea Lutheran Mission where he served as Business Manager. From then until his death he and Beth served various ministries: parish ministries in Baltimore, Maryland, and Seabeck, Washington, and overseas ministries again in Papua New Guinea, in Ghana, West Africa, and in South Africa. He "retired" in 1992 and intermittently served in part-time parish ministries. Richard is survived by his wife Elizabeth and five children: Christine, Paul, Susan, Mary and Martha; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, consider making a donation in his name to St. John Lutheran Church for the Education Ministry of Themba Trust in Dirkiesdorp, South Africa. A memorial service will be held at St. John Lutheran Church, 1350 Court St NE, Salem, Oregon, at 1:00 PM on Saturday, November 5, with a reception to follow at the church.
