EDWARDSVILLE - Gary W. Thiems, 76, of Edwardsville, Illinois, died Thursday, October 13, 2016, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJC) in Saint Louis, Missouri. He was born on Thursday, October 19, 1939, in Highland, Illinois, the son of Walter W. and Anita A. (nee Plocher) Thiems. On Saturday, September 16, 1961, he married Diann J. (nee Broniec) Thiems at Evangelical United Church of Christ in Highland, who survives in Edwardsville. He was also a member of Carpenter Local - St. Louis, Missouri. He was a former member of Moose Lodge. Gary was born and reared in Highland, Illinois. He was a 1957 Highland High School graduate. He attended Carpenter's School. He made Edwardsville, Illinois home in 1969. He worked for John Kraus, Cannon Construction, and started Thiems' Construction in 1972 in Edwardsville and now in Roxanna, Illinois. They build roads, bridges and commercial construction. He was still active in the business. In 1992, he developed 18 hole Fox Creek Golf Course and Fox Creek Estates (a large residential subdivision). He enjoyed boating on Table Rock Lake, winter in Florida at Marco Island and riding motorcycles. When he was young his hobbies were golfing, fishing and camping. Survivors include his wife, Diann J. Thiems, nee Broniec of Edwardsville; two sons, Terry L. (Dee) Thiems of Edwardsville, and Tad W. (Justina Carroll) Thiems of Edwardsville; grandchildren, Tara N. Thiems, Taylor L. Thiems, Tanya M. Thiems, Tianna J. "Tia" Thiems, and Tad W. "T.J." Thiems, Jr., all of Edwardsville; and a sister, Rita C. (Dale) Rinderer of Trenton, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his father, Walter W. Thiems, died on May 15, 1989; mother, Anita A. Thiems, nee Plocher, died on August 28, 1991. Arrangements are being handled by Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, Illinois. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 17, 2016, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, and from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Funeral Service on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2016, at Evangelical United Church of Christ in Highland, with Rev. Christopher W. Hill, Senior Pastor officiating. Interment will be at Highland City Cemetery in Highland. Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children.
