Lane Young Cook
COOK, Lane Young Lane Young Cook, 77, of Atlanta and Cashiers, N.C., passed away suddenly but peacefully on October 10, 2016, from heart failure. She was born in Griffin, Ga. on Oct. 6, 1939 to Henry Lane and Lida Read Voigt Young. Shortly thereafter the family moved to Atlanta where she grew up with two sisters. She attended Morris Brandon Elementary School, Northside High School, and was a graduate of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. In her career years, she worked as a radiologist for an orthopedic surgeon in Atlanta and later was in charge of public relations for the founders of Underground Atlanta in the 1960s. She moved on to the securities business with Canter Fitzgerald, and then founded her own firm with two colleagues from the brokerage business. Lane was a former member of the Junior League of Atlanta. She was an active member of the Atlanta Colonial Dames, The Atlanta Botanical Garden, and served on the Board of the Atlanta Humane Society, where she met her future husband Rodney Cook. She was always active in the garden clubs in Atlanta and Cashiers and was a patron of the Highlands/Cashiers Chamber Music Group. She traveled extensively and had many lifelong friends all over the world. Good friends were a celebration of life for Lane and a good reason to have a party. She relished being surrounded by close friends in Atlanta and Cashiers. Lane was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Rodney M. Cook, Sr., and her beloved Elvis Presley. She is survived by her sisters, Lida Young Askew and Bonnie Young of Atlanta; nephew Bill Askew; and her niece Lida Askew and her two children, Andrew and Emily Askew, all of Atlanta. There will be a memorial service for Lane at the Cathedral of St. Philip, 2744 Peachtree Rd NW, Atlanta, Ga. 30305, on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity.
