In memory of
Kathryn Joann Conlin-Schoen
Dr. Kathryn "Joann" Schoen-Conlin November 22, 1933 - October 1, 2016 Dr. Kathryn "Joann" Schoen-Conlin (mother of locals Kathryn Richardson and Kelly Johnson) of Modesto, California, passed away at age 82 on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at Memorial Hospital in Modesto. In mid-September, Joann fell ill and required surgery. Though she survived two surgeries, ultimately her body was unable to heal. She eventually went peacefully, surrounded by family to meet her Lord. Born Kathryn Joann Conlin in DeKalb, Illinois on November 22, 1933 to John and Kathryn (McCabe) Conlin, she was the eldest of four daughters. She graduated from DeKalb High School in 1951 and went on to graduate from Incarnate Word College in San Antonio, Texas with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Her beauty and brains led her to be crowned Fiesta Duchess at Incarnate Word where she was photographed in an elaborate red velvet gown. These portraits have since been one of the family's favorite examples of her glory.  She continued her education and earned her Master of Science in Nursing from University of Texas. Joann then received her Doctor of Education from Pepperdine University. The majority of her career was spent serving as Dean of Allied Health and Nursing at various community colleges.  A recipient of many awards and acclimations, including Alumni of Distinction presented at Incarnate Word College, Joann was dedicated to academia in higher education and recognized often for her contributions. Joann raised her five children: Kathy, Richard, Tommy, Kelly and Amy Carubbi. She is survived by her three daughters, Kathryn Richardson, Kelly (Kenny) Johnson, and Amy Barron. She was "Nana" to several grandchildren, including locals Katlin (Jake) Zimmer, Jack Richardson, and Tianna and Sean Johnson. Her great grandson Jacob Zimmer II brought her immense joy, in her last years.  She was close with and is survived by her two sisters, Maureen (Tom) Jeter and Sheila (Bob) Neslage. She was the eldest of the Conlin (McGirr and Gallagher) cousins, of Illinois.  She was a wonderful aunt and cousin to all of her extended family.  Her friend and ex-husband A.J Carubbi also survives her. Known as "Nana" to everybody, she helped raise and guide many of her family and friends, and loved the friends of her children and grandchildren as though they were her own. A Mass will be held in her honor at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 1813 Oakdale Road, Modesto, California, 95355, at 9:30am on Friday, October 28, 2016, followed by a Celebration of Life to honor her and the love she bestowed on all. The Celebration of Life will be held at her home, 3536 Battleboro Road, Modesto, California, 95357, from 11:30-3pm on Friday, October 28, 2016. A second service, celebration, and interment will be held in her place of birth, Saturday, November 5, 2016.   "May you always walk in sunshine.  May you never want for more.  May Irish angels rest their wings right beside your door."  For information contact Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel, (209) 523-5646.
