In memory of
Vernon H. Kepler
Vernon H. Kepler, 78, of New Smyrna Beach, died Monday, October 10, 2016, after a lengthy illness that he fought on his own terms, with strong will and sheer determination, the same way he lived life. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by family, friends, fellow serviceman, co-workers, and too many others to name. Born in Baltimore, MD, to Chester and Mary Underwood Kepler; Vern moved to Florida in 1995 from Pasadena, MD, and was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, New Smyrna Beach. A retired Captain for the United States Army Special Forces and a Vietnam Veteran, Vern was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #1, originally located in China. His career was spent serving the U.S Government in a variety of unique and challenging leadership roles within the intelligence community in many countries throughout the world. Upon retirement from the government, Vern became involved with real estate development in designing and building various businesses in the New Smyrna Beach area. Vern's life experience and accomplishments are far too many to list. A world traveler, a plane enthusiast and pilot, he loved flying as well as boating and riding motorcycles. Everyone he knew and even those he met by chance, became lifelong friends and everybody always had a good "Vern Story" to share. He was married to his loving and devoted wife of 13 years, Sue; and is survived by his proudest accomplishments, his son, Jeff and daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Dale Smith. He took extreme pride in his two beautiful granddaughters, Lauren Smith and Emily Smith, who lovingly called him Pop. Friends and family will be received from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 16, at Settle-Wilder Funeral Home, 406 S. Orange Street, New Smyrna Beach, Florida 32168, with interment to follow, with full military honors, at Sea Pines Memorial Gardens, 3001 S. Ridgewood Avenue, Edgewater, Florida, beginning at 4:00 p.m. A reception will be held from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the American Legion Post # 17, Canal Street, New Smyrna Beach, Florida, for a mandatory and final toast in Vern's honor, the greatest Husband, Dad and Grandfather in the world! Memorial donations may be made in Vern's name to: Operation Family Fund United States, P.O. Box 837, Ridgecrest, CA 93556 or Wounded Warrior Project, Inc. Condolences may be made online at .
