Francine R. Sawyer NEW BERN - Francine Rose Sawyer, 66, of New Bern, died Friday, Oct. 7, at Carolina East Medical Center, New Bern. The Elizabeth City native was predeceased by her parents, Joseph (Joe) Riddick Sawyer and Rose Loretta DeAnthony Sawyer. She is survived by her husband, Alfred Lane White, of the home; her stepson, James C. White and wife Nicole of Greensboro; and her brother, Joseph (Sonny) White, of Elizabeth City. Francine was widely known for her work in the media. An alumna of Chowan College (now Chowan University), she began her journalism career in The Daily Advance newsroom and later was named Editor of The Perquimans Weekly. She began working at the New Bern Sun Journal in 1978 and later worked at the Jacksonville Daily News. She also worked at WCTI-TV as a reporter and for Public Radio East as the news director. Francine's first love, however, was print journalism, and she returned to work at the Sun Journal for the remainder of her career. She retired in 2012. No services are planned at this date.
