In memory of
Don R. Summerford
Don R. Summerford of Broken Bow, departed this life Oct. 11, 2016, at Broken Bow Care and Rehabilitation Center surrounded by his loving family. Don was born July 6, 1945, in Cumberland Courthouse, Va. and at the age of six moved to New Jersey where he resided until 1990, when he and long-time companion Ellen Oliver moved to Broken Bow, soon to be followed by Don's son, David. Don was a truck driver/owner-operator by trade and spent his entire adult life behind the wheel logging an immeasurable number of miles from coast to coast. Among the many companies he was associated with were Companies Transport, Inc., Totowa, N.J.; Mac's Trucking, Inc., Merna; H&M Trucking, Omaha; Trotter's, Inc., Broken Bow; and Cliff Viessman Trucking, Columbus. Some of the many products "in his wagon" have been medical supplies, grain, salt, cabinets, chemicals, feed and magazines. Don loved the outdoors. He spent many hours hunting and he was especially fond of riding his Harley and his horses. Seldom was he without the company of his beloved dog, Cinch. In 1998 Don and Ellen were joined by long-time friend Laura Perez and they continued to make their home west of Broken Bow until the time of his death. Don is survived by Ellen and Laura; his sons, Adam Summerford of Waxhaw, N.C., and David Summerford and his wife, Bobbie of Broken Bow; Richard Oliver of Hawthorne, N.J. and Suzanne Marsico of Hawthorne, N.J.; grandchildren, Elizabeth Rose and Sebastian of Washaw, N.C. Carrie of Lincoln, Shawn of BrokenBow, and Brittaney and Steven of Hawthorne, N.J.; and one great-granddaughter, Adriel Elizabeth. Also surviving Don are "adopted" family Mike and Kim Mooney, Lisa Vraspir and her husband, Allen, Marcy Yates and her husband, Eric, and Nikki Mooney; along with Peg and Dick Holeman. A celebration of life will be Friday, Oct. 14, 2-4 p.m. at the 4-H Building at the Custer County Fairgrounds. Memorials may be given to the family for designation at a later date.
