MAY, Don Lee Don Lee May, 85, of Austin, Texas passed away on October 11, 2016, surrounded by family. He was born in Dublin, Texas on May 4, 1931. He attended Gorman Elementary School through first grade. He then attended the Texas School for the Blind from 1938 to 1950 where he met Helen Keller at age 9. Don graduated from Fort Worth Technical High School in 1952. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Psychology from Texas Christian University in 1957. He later received a Master of Education in Counseling and Guidance from West Texas State College in 1962. He was married to Mona Estelle McLain May on September 2, 1959 at the First Christian Church in Spearman, Texas. Don worked for almost 40 years in the field of counseling. He began his career at the Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville, Texas where he worked as a psychometrist and clinical counselor in rehabilitation from 1957-1961. In the spring of 1962 he served as an intern at Amarillo Air Force Base in conjunction with his Master's degree program. After he received his Master's Degree, he began work as a vocational rehabilitation counselor at McKnight State Chest Hospital in San Angelo, Texas. In 1968 he began work as a counselor in the Rehabilitation Vocation Division of the Texas Education Agency, which later became the Texas Rehabilitation Commission (TRC). On September 12, 1969, the Texas Rehabilitation Association named him Counselor of the Year. From 1970 to 1993, he served in the State TRC office as a specialist in the programs of Social Security, Diabetes, Arthritis, Respiratory Diseases and General Programs. At the age of 62, after 31 years of service, he retired from TRC. Don was a charter member of Austin Baptist Church and had a passion for his family, their history, music, and TCU football. As a young man, he played the bass fiddle in dance bands. He was a direct descendent of the Castleman and Crownover families of Stephen F. Austin's "old 300" colony. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Coen May and Clara Mae Jones May; his siblings, Ruth E. Rucker Rodgers and Thurman K. Rucker; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is survived by his wife, Mona Estelle McLain May; his children, Denise Lynn May Baker (and husband Jay Baker), Terry Don May (and wife Susan Eugster May), Dianne Elaine May Lankford (and husband Paul Lankford), and David McLain May (and wife Kristy Wieland May); and his grandchildren, Jason ,Thomas Baker, Jennifer Dianne Baker, William Lee Baker, Matthew Don May, McKenna Nicole May, Allison Kathe May, Taylor Elaine Lankford, David Lee Lankford, Morgan McLain May, Kristyn Elaine May, Amanda Janice May. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Thursday, October 13, 2016 at the Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 14, 2016 at Austin Baptist Church, 7016 Ribelin Ranch Drive, Austin. Interment will be at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery.
