Phillip Malta
Phillip Malta, 82, of Mountain Top, passed away peacefully in his sleep after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease on Monday, Oct. 10, 2016. Born Oct. 16, 1933, in Wilkes-Barre, to Bahia Louise Amiouni and Habib Malta, Phillip was the youngest of five sons and one daughter. He was a graduate of GAR Memorial High School and the Pennsylvania State University, where he earned an Associate of Science degree in electronic engineering. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a cook while stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He then began a long career at RCA Corp. in Mountain Top (later Harris and GE), where he worked for more than 35 years as the cafeteria manager before retiring. He was a member of St. Mary's Antiochian Orthodox Church in Wilkes-Barre. Phillip loved spending time with his family, including his children, grandchildren, siblings and extended family. He enjoyed cooking, exercising, long walks and beach vacations, including the many years he spent time with his children at Ocean City, N.J. Phillip was preceded in death by his parents, Habib and Bahia, brothers, John, Michael, Jacob and Edward, and sister, Katherine Hanneye, all of Wilkes-Barre; and his beloved fiancée of 39 years, Barbara Ann Schmidt, Sugar Notch. He is survived by his three children, Debbie, Mountain Top; Dave (Dana) and Dean (Kristin), Raleigh, N.C.; and four grandchildren, Samiah, Ethan, Daniel and Nicole, Raleigh, N.C. The family would like to thank Smith Healthcare of Mountain Top for the compassionate care they provided to Phillip during the course of this year. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary's Antiochian Orthodox Church, Hanover. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Mamary-Durkin Funeral Service, 59 Parrish St., Wilkes-Barre. Arrangements are by Mamary-Durkin Funeral Service, 59 Parrish St., Wilkes-Barre.
