In memory of
Betty Hudson
Betty Hudson, nee Bagi, of North Branford, formerly of Simsbury, Madison and Stamford, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 9th, 2016 at Evergreen Woods Assisted Living. She was 85 years old. Born March 5th, 1931 in Port Chester, NY, Betty was the daughter of Ernest and Mary Bagi and the identical twin sister of Re-Re. She attended Stamford High School and upon graduating, attended Michigan State University. She married Donald Hudson and settled in Branford where they began a family. She was a fabulous cook, renown for her gravy and stuffed peppers, and was a neighborhood fixture - playing kickball with the kids and teaching some to ride bikes and swim. In the mid-60s, Don and Betty relocated to Madison where Betty began her political career as a Madison Selectwoman. Later she was elected Connecticut State Senator of the 33rd District, and then became Governor Grasso's advisor on Human Affairs, State Director of Welfare Offices and a member of the state's Permanent Commission on the Status of Women. Through-out her career she was a true servant of the people, leading with integrity, humor, principle and determination to make life better for those who needed help the most. During this period, her 27 year marriage ended and Betty moved to Simsbury, CT with her long-term friend and companion, Fran Roberts. There she got involved with community issues, and is recognized as being instrumental in creating the Old Drake Hill Flower Bridge. In her past times, she and Franny traveled the world. Betty was an avid reader, birding enthusiast, team bowler, and a huge fan of the Hartford Hawks women's basketball team and the UCONN Huskies. She was blessed with and loved her two grandsons and was a devoted grandmother. Two years ago, she sold her beloved home to the Town of Simsbury to enable her unique, waterfront property be transformed into a riverfront park for town residents to enjoy. She relocated to Evergreen Woods Assisted Living Residence where she lived until her passing. She was a devoted sister, companion, aunt, mother and grandmother, and will be lovingly remembered. Betty is survived by her identical twin sister, Marie (Re-Re) Spaulding and her husband, Bruce, her son, Todd Hudson and his wife, Tamara Greenleaf, her daughter, Leigh Hudson and two grandsons, Chris Zins and Jon Zins, her friend and companion Fran Roberts and her daughters, Maggie Barkin and Priscilla Cummings, her niece Pam Matteson and her husband Bill, her nephew Brad Spaulding and his wife Nancy, and her second cousin Beverly Spence and her husband Stuart. Memorial services will be held Saturday, October 15th. Calling hours are 9:30-11:00 at the Swan Funeral Home, 825 Boston Post Road, Madison CT. A Celebration of Life and luncheon will be held at 11 AM at the Madison Senior Center, 29 Bradley Road, Madison, Ct. Swan Funeral Home is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Old Drake Hill Flower Bridge, P.O. Box 314, West Simsbury, CT. 06092. The family extends their thanks to those who supported and loved Betty during her life, and gives special thanks to the staff of Evergreen Woods for their kindness, compassion and support of Betty.
