T. Vance Hinkson
T. Vance Hinkson, 85, former Towanda businessman, of Hillcrest Drive, Towanda, Pa., passed away Tuesday evening, Oct. 11, 2016 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre. Vance was born in Sayre, Pa., on March 26, 1931, to William Montgomery Hinkson and Ida Marian Gehr Hinkson. Vance was a native of Athens, Pa., and was a graduate of Athens High School Class of 1949 and was a member of the Athens Bulldog Football team. In 1951, Vance graduated from Rochester Business Institute where he was a member of the Tau Sigma Phi Fraternity, and subsequently accepted a position with the First Federal Savings and Loan of Rochester where he served as an auditor for the institution's branch offices for a year. From 1952 to 1954, Vance served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War receiving the rank of Corporal and following completion of his military service returned home to join the staff of the Sayre First National Bank for two years. He was later appointed as manager of the Star Building and Loan in Sayre in 1957 also serving as association secretary for seven years. On Feb. 15, 1958 he married Joyce Arlene Rogers at the First Presbyterian Church in Waverly, N.Y. Vance attended Elmira College and the American Savings and Loan Institute. For many years, Vance served as a real estate broker and appraiser for the American Realty Agency, Inc. initially operating offices in Athens and Troy, Pa., Waverly, N.Y. and lastly Towanda, Pa., transferring his real estate office from Athens to Towanda in January of 1965 when he purchased his Income Tax and Accounting Business in Towanda. Vance was a registered representative for Waddell & Reed Inc. national distributor of United Funds Group of mutual funds, partner/owner of Northeast Developers, Inc., former owner of the Western Auto Store in Towanda and held the franchise for the North Towanda Montgomery Ward Store. Vance retired from business on May 31, 2002. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Society of Public Accountants, National Association of Real Estate Brokers, Pennsylvania Realtors Association and Past President of the Five County Realtors Association. Vance previously served as a North Towanda Township Supervisor and Auditor for North Towanda Supervisors. He was a member of the North Towanda Water and Sewer Authority and one of the organizers of the North Towanda Fire Department. Vance formerly served as a Board Member and Treasurer of the Northern Tier Economic Development Association of Bradford County, Advisory Board member of the Sayre Savings and Loan Association and the Commonwealth Telephone Company, former Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Farmers National Bank, Rome, Pa., instructor for Trehab, Inc. of Towanda, Past President and Director of the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce and Sayre Chamber of Commerce, Past President and Director of the Towanda Chamber of Commerce, Past Director of the Endless Mountains Association, former Treasurer of the Industry for Bradford County, Inc., Towanda Cemetery Association (Oak Hill Cemetery), Riverside Cemetery Association, Towanda, and participated on the building fund committee's for Memorial Hospital, Towanda and the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre. In early years, Vance attended the Athens Presbyterian Church where he was baptized, served as an Elder, President of the Board of Trustees, Youth Fellowship Advisor, Sunday school teacher, Secretary-Treasurer of the Couples Club and sang in the church choir. He became a member of the Towanda Presbyterian Church in 1967 where he served as an Elder, President of the Board of Trustees, Secretary-Treasurer-Log Keeper of the Mariners Club and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Susquehanna Collegiate Institute. Vance was a director of the Bradford-Sullivan Counties American Red Cross Chapter, former Vice-President and Director of the Sayre Rotary Club, former President and Secretary of the Towanda Rotary Club and former President and Finance Director of the Valley Economic Development Association. Vance was a 60-year member of Rural Amity Lodge No. 70 F. & A.M. Athens, Secretary for Northern Commandery No. 16 Knights Templar, Towanda, Past High Priest of Amity Chapter No. 293, Athens, and was a member of the Williamsport Consistory 32nd degree. He was a member of the Irem Temple Shrine of Dallas, Pa., and Past President of the Bradford County Shrine Club. Vance was a member of Towanda American Legion Post No. 42, past member of the Waverly, N.Y. American Legion Post, Towanda Country Club, Athens and Towanda Museums, Sayre and Towanda Elks Clubs, International Order of Odd Fellows and Past Director and Treasurer of French Azilum, Inc. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Joyce A. Hinkson at home; children, Susan Hinkson (Michael Epler), Thomas V. Hinkson Jr. (Patricia), Sharon Hinkson Horton (Roger Sr.) and Sandra Hinkson Bricka; grandchildren, Ian Whinnery (Jessica Williams), Erin Whinnery, Evan Whinnery, Hannah Fleager, Elena Hinkson, Kiersten Horton, Roger Horton Jr., Brock Horton, Christopher Horton, Addison Bricka and Eden Bricka; great grandchildren, Tylor Gardner, Taydin Gardner, Trentyn Gardner, Brezlen Whinnery and Haley Whinnery. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by sisters and brothers-in-law, Louise Barton, (J. Reid Barton), Marian Fabrizi, (Joseph Fabrizi); brother and sister-in-law, William Hinkson Jr., (Virginia Hinkson). The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016 with a funeral service to follow at 4 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 5 Court St., Towanda, Pa. Officiating will be Rev. Rachel Stahle, pastor. Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 will accord military honors at the church. Rural Amity Lodge No. 70 F. & A.M. Athens, Pa., will hold a service of remembrance at 4 p.m. on Sunday at the church. Interment will be private in Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, Pa. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church, 5 Court St., Towanda, PA 18848, in T. Vance Hinkson's memory.
