Ben was the son of the late Benjamin H. and Dollie Kate Poole Newberry. He graduated from Perry High School and went on to earn a Mechanical Engineering Degree from Georgia Institute of Technology. While there Ben worked as a co-op with Blue Bird Body Company and proudly served our country in the US Army upon graduation. He had a 43 year career as a Mechanical Engineer at Blue Bird Body Company until his retirement as a Engineering Manager. He passed his love of engineering to both his sons and even his granddaughter. Ben was a lifelong member of Perry United Methodist Church. He was a member of the IHS Sunday School Class, in which he led singing for 40 years. His love of music shone through as he was also a member of the church choir and the Joy Choir. Ben served most every leadership role in the church and enjoyed the fellowship at United Methodist Men. For years, he attended the Men's Tuesday morning prayer breakfast group. Ben truly loved his church and one of his greatest pleasures for these past 14 months was to have Shirley by his side on the back row every Sunday morning. As a hobby, he spent a lot of time woodworking making beautiful pieces that his family and friends will cherish. Ben also loved golf, playing when he could, and watching the Atlanta Braves play baseball. But his greatest joy in life was his family. Ben was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Mildred G. Newberry. Left to cherish the memories of Ben are his loving and devoted wife, Shirley Newberry; his children, Pep Newberry (Melissa), Keith Newberry (Linda), Beth Roper (Buddy), Matt Davis (Stephanie), Susan Feehan (Brian); his grandchildren, Philip Newberry, Jr, Laura Porter (Chris), Brent Roper (Liz), Becca McLeod (Benji), Tyler Davis, Emily Davis, Matt Feehan; his great-grandchildren, Lucy Roper and Mac McLeod; his sister, Jacquelyn "Jackie" Beeland (Martin); and numerous nieces and nephews. Ben leaves behind a multitude of friends in the Perry community who will miss him as well. Condolences for the family may be left in the online guestbook at www.watsonhunt.com .
