Judith A. Richards
RICHARDS JUDITH A. of West Bloomfield, Michigan passed away on October 11, 2016 at 6:00a.m. with her husband Robert Richards at her side. Mrs. Richards was born Judith Ann Jory in Dearborn, Michigan on February 26, 1938. Mrs. Richards is survived by her devoted husband of 55 years, Bob (originally of Marquette, Michigan); brother James (Mary) Jory; nephews Jim (Annette) and Lincoln (Barbara) Jory; and numerous relatives. Her parents, Lincoln and Lorene Jory, predeceased her. Judy and Bob met at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, MI, where Judy earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. Education and teaching were paramount in their lives, and their family lineage. Judy had a rich and fulfilling 30 plus year career as an elementary school teacher in the Royal Oak public schools. Judy's love of teaching was inspired by her Aunt Minnie Wilson, an education leader, and blossomed with Bob, a high school math teacher, whose own mother and aunt were teachers. Judy and Bob learned from each other professionally and grew even closer together in their daily walks and talks at the end of each school day. Though the Richards had no children of their own, their students were like family. Mrs. Richards was a friend and mentor to students for decades. Mrs. Richards and her husband loved to travel. And often did with friends and family, including Weldon and Helen Richards of Walnut Creek, CA. Judy and Bob visited 48 of America's states, including Alaska and Hawaii. They also took a train trip across the continent, and cruises in Europe. The Richards spent twenty winters in Hilton Head Island, where they had many friends and enjoyed golfing. Judy was a longstanding, active member of the Community House Women's Club in Birmingham. The Women's Club meets twice monthly to learn from prominent speakers about pressing issues. Judy served on the Board of Directors and as Vice President. A tall, statuesque and striking woman with impeccable style, Judy also was a premier model at the Women's Club's annual Fall Fashion Show. Judy, who has donated her body to medicine, valiantly and openly fought against and handled stage four ovarian cancer for twenty months, pursuing alternative, natural healing approaches, and enduring extensive chemotherapy, surgery, and experimental treatments. Mrs. Richards advocated for advanced research regarding ovarian cancer, and for improvements in health care services. Judy will be remembered for her smile and laugh, her strength and her character. She was a kind, smart, beautiful, grounded and loving wife, family member, friend, and teacher to hundreds of children. Her legacy will live on. Mass of Christian Burial, Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 11:00a.m. at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 4300 Walnut Lake Rd., West Bloomfield, MI, 48323. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Karmanos Cancer Institute. www.mccabefuneralhome.com
