In memory of
Eileen Frances Reis Laughner
Eileen Frances Reis Laughner 82, passed away peacefully on Monday, Oct. 10, 2016 at her home in Indianapolis with her family by her side. Born on August 5, 1934, in Indianapolis, she was the youngest daughter of Arthur and Alma Jonas Reis. She was a 1952 graduate of St. Agnes Academy high school, and graduated with a degree in Business Administration from Butler University in 1956, where she was voted the Freshman Rose Queen. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority, and remained an active member of their alumnae club for many years. She was a member of the Alpha Upsilon chapter of Latreian service sorority, and a founding member of the St. Luke Catholic Parish in Indianapolis. She was the loving mother of three children, Jack Laughner II, and J. Scott Laughner, of Indianapolis, and Diann Laughner Johandes, of Rockford, Michigan. After raising her children, she became a successful real estate agent with Graves and later Tucker agencies. She worked tirelessly for her clients and thoroughly enjoyed helping others find their dream home. She was a talented artist and enjoyed painting for many years. She valued family above all else, and her children, grandchildren, and son- and daughters-in-law always knew they were her number one priority. She always brought treats and gifts for her children and grandchildren, but her greatest gift was the love she showered on all of them. She loved having her family home at Lake Wawasee, and watching her children and grandchildren grow to love it, too. She loved getting together for any reason, but especially enjoyed being with family to cheer on the Indianapolis Colts. A Purdue fan at heart, but a supporter of whatever you loved, she even humored her daughter-in-law by showing up in full Hoosier regalia to watch an IU game with her. She enjoyed traveling with her siblings and with her daughter and daughters-in-law. But she was happy to be wherever she was, and had an endless supply of patience, no matter the circumstance. She was as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside, and never left her house without insuring she looked her best. She was the epitome of a lady, with a smile that lit up every room she entered. She truly lived the adage that a stranger was merely a friend she hadn't yet met. Throughout her 10 month illness, she still remained more concerned about everyone else's comfort than her own, and all the healthcare workers she came in contact with grew to love her. She was a beacon of love and kindness to every person she met, and never complained, always finding the silver lining in any situation. Her motto was "Be kind," and she surely was. She was a committed and loyal friend, having played bridge with the same group of ladies from West 77th Street for 53 years. She was a gentle, genteel, loving matriarch who will be very sadly missed by her family and friends. Survivors include her three children and their spouses, Jack and Lisa Laughner, Scott and Julie Laughner, and Diann and Steve Johandes; and five grandchildren, Jim Laughner, of Indianapolis, Rob Laughner, of Denver, CO, Chris Laughner, of Chicago, IL, Peyton and Parker Laughner, of Indianapolis, and Ellie and Abby Johandes, of Rockford, MI; one sister, Mary Reis Zaleski, of Richmond, IN, who spent almost every day of the last 10 months by her side; several nieces and nephews, and cousins; and her beloved "bridge girls." She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Arthur Reis, Jr., and sister, Carolyn Reis Mackie. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2016 from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m., with a Funeral Mass to immediately follow. Both will be held at St. Luke Catholic Church at 7575 Holliday Dr. East, Indianapolis. She will be interred at Holy Cross Cemetery, 2446 S. Meridian St., Indianapolis.
