Phyllis Caroline Alexander Reed
Phyllis Caroline Alexander Reed was born Dec. 25, 1922, in Elyria, Ohio, to Margaret Neufer Alexander and Alfred Alexander. She graduated from Elyria High School in 1940 and then attended Baldwin Wallace College, in Berea, Ohio, where she graduated with a major in business and a minor in English and was a member of the Phi Mu sorority. There, she roomed with Helen Reed, sister of her future husband, Boyd Alvin Reed. Mrs. Reed was married on March 9, 1946, to Boyd Alvin Reed and moved to Drift, where she lived for most of her life. In Drift and Allen, she raised her four children and one foster son and was a very involved member of the community, especially at Drift Presbyterian Church, where she was a charter member, Sunday school teacher, session member and treasurer. She was also a charter member of the Drift Women's Club, a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, and held start the kindergarten at Drift Grade School in 1954. She worked for Elkhorn Industrial Products and Reed Engineering Company and was a board member of Our Lady of the Way Hospital. Mrs. Reed passed away on Dec. 29, 2014. She is survived by a son, John (Dana), of Banner; three daughters, Ann (Bart) Jones, of Birmingham, Ala., Margaret (Neil) Bell, of Brighton, Tenn., and Nancy (Rich) Hines, of Richmond, Va.; nine grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Boyd Alvin Reed; her brother, Alfred "Bucky" Alexander Jr.; her foster son, Franklin D. Salyers; and her favorite cousin, Mildred Fujka. Visitation will be held at the Hall Funeral Home in Martin, at 6 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 1. Services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Jan. 2, at First Presbyterian Church, in Prestonsburg. Burial will follow in Davidson Memorial Gardens, at Ivel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the First Presbyterian Church, in Prestonsburg.
