Elbert A. MEEKS Jr.
Elbert A. Meeks Jr., 88, of Vinton, died Tuesday, November 5, 2013. He was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II, having received nine Silver Stars. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church for many years and more recently a member of Vinton Baptist Church which was his home church and where he was married and baptized. Elbert was employed for 42 years and retired from Hickory Printing Company (formerly Stone Printing and Manufacturing Company) and was a member of the Master Printing Union. Elbert was also a member of Vinton Host Lions Club since 1962 and was named a Melvin Jones Fellow by Lions Club International for humanitarian services. He was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas H. Meeks Sr. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Louise Markham Meeks; and one son, Mark A. Meeks and his wife, Josie L. Meeks. Funeral services will be conducted at noon on Saturday, November 9, 2013, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel with Dr. William Booth and the Rev. Donna Hopkins Britt officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Rescue Mission. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, November 8, 2013, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel, 540-982-2221.
