Albert Hopper MORGANTON Albert R. Hopper, 88, of Morganton, died Thursday, June 20, 2013, following a period of declining health at his home, where he had been lovingly cared for by Vicki Avery and his immediate family. He was born in Nassau County, N.Y. July 1, 1924, and was a son of the late Nathan and Mary Armeli Hopper. Al was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a member of V. F. W. Post 2770, Bellmore, N.Y. A carpenter by trade, Al was also a car enthusiast, an artist, and an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves. He was a loving husband and father, and leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 67 years, Adele Conley Hopper, of the home; and his children and their spouses, Laurence and Kathy Hopper, of Deland, Fla., Linda and Richard Marzen, of Morganton and Dolores and Robert Troxel, of Haddon Heights, N.J. A devoted grandfather and great-grandfather, he was blessed with eight grandchildren, Rebecca, Richard, Tracy, Melissa, Wendy, Mary, Amy, and Sara and 11 great-grandchildren, Mickaela, Braden, Anthony, Madelyn, Luke, Ben, Gracie, Nathan, Amber, Caleb, and Abby. In addition to his parents, Al was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn; and by a brother, Charles Hopper. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 25, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, with Fr. Kenneth Whittington officiating. Burial will be at 12 p.m. Tuesday at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the NC National Guard and the Buncombe County Veteran Council Memorial Team. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 24, at Sossoman Funeral Home.
