Patricia (Nearing) VanDyne
Patricia (Nearing) VanDyne, of Canandaigua, N.Y. passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2011 at FF Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua. Pattie was born on Dec. 28, 1940 in Rhinebeck, N.Y. and was the second of four children of Robert and Jeanne (Will) Nearing. She graduated from Troy High School in Pennsylvania in 1959 and earned a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Mansfield College (now University) She raised two sons, Randall and Kyle both of whom were with her at the end. She was employed in a variety of positions over the years but found her niche in the social work department of FF Thompson Hospital in the mid 1990s. She retired in 2003 as the first oncology social worker of Sands Cancer Center. In retirement, she was active in Naples Weaver's Guild, Bloomfield Garden Club and as a Compassionate Care volunteer. She was appointed to the Town of Canandaigua Planning Board and for two years was chairperson of that body. Most recently, she held a seat on the Canandaigua Zoning Board of Appeals. She married Ed VanDyne in 1991 and they lived in a country farmhouse outside of Canandaigua for almost all of their years together. Pat is survived by her sister, Jill (Dr. Francis) Daniel; younger brothers, Robert (Kelly) Nearing and John(Mary Ann) Nearing; sons, Randall (Stephanie) Whittaker and Kyle (Gwen) Whittaker; stepchildren, Jessica (James) Evans and Christopher VanDyne; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; innumerable friends; and her beloved feline companions. A memorial gathering will be held at the time of spring flowers. Interment will be at a later date. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Sands Cancer Center, 360 Parrish St., Canandaigua, NY 14424 or to the Happy Tails Animal Shelter, 2976 Co. Rd. 48, Canandaigua, NY 14424.
