Mrs. Catherine Ann Stickley
Catherine Ann Stickley, 79, a lifelong nurse and educator and loving mother to eight children, died Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck. A Hudson Valley resident since 1965, she had currently resided for the past two years in Red Hook.
Born in Brockton, Mass. on November 15, 1933, Mrs. Stickley was the daughter of the late Francis Edward and Margaret Mary Kelleher Long.
She received her RN degree from Peter Bent Brigham School of Nursing in Boston, Mass. in 1954 and went on to receive her BS degree from Mount St. Mary's College in Newburgh and her Master's degree from Russell Sage College in Troy.
Most recently, Catherine was a nursing instructor in the LPN program at Dutchess County BOCES. She retired in 1996. Over the course of her career she also worked as a nurse with the Dutchess County Department of Health and taught nursing courses for a time at Dutchess Community College.
No matter where she resided, Mrs. Stickley was always active in her local church parish. She was a communicant of the Church of St. Christopher in Red Hook. She was also an active volunteer with the American Cancer Society, and past recipient of the Betty Meedy Service Award of the Year.
On June 6, 1955 in Monroe, NY, she married Gustav Stickley III. Her husband of 57 years survives at home in Red Hook.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by eight children, Katie of Clinton Corners, Mary Alyce (Mimi) and husband, Guy, of Red Hook, Frances (Wendy) and husband, Paul, of Westwood, Mass., Gustav IV and wife, Mary, of Mashpee, Mass., Michael and wife, Mary Beth, of Milford, Conn., Timothy and wife, Patti, of Goshen, NY, Daniel and wife, Ana, of Davies, Florida, and Thomas and wife, Stacey, of Corte Madera, CA; seventeen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three siblings, Mary Louise Wrin and husband, David, of Braintree, Mass., Michael Long and wife, Ann, of Bridgewater, MA, and Patricia Brown and husband, Rick, of La Mirada, CA; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm, Tuesday, January 15th at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am, Wednesday, January 16th at the Church of St. Christopher, South Broadway & Garden Street, Red Hook, NY.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation will follow.
