Florence Ruth Piper
Florence Ruth Piper of Miramar Beach, FL was born September 1, 1924 in Dumont, N.J. to Emma Louise Piper (Smith) and Henry George Piper. A member of Destin United Methodist Church, Florence went to be with the Lord June 8, 2019 at age 94. She lived independently until her final 4 months, and then was lovingly cared for at Chautauqua Rehab & Nursing Center in Defuniak Springs, FL. Florence passed this world peacefully. After graduating from Dumont H.S. in 1941 she earned her nursing diploma from Jersey City Medical Center in February 1946 with "Final Health Honors". Florence then furthered her education with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Asbury College in Kentucky in 1949. Her passion for helping others led to work as a Methodist medical missionary from 1951-1955 in Japan and Korea. Originally scheduled to work in China, Florence studied Chinese language a full academic school year at Yale University to prepare for her travels to Asia. She focused on training and assisting local nurses and healthcare workers. As a Registered Nurse (RN) upon her return from Korea Florence served in the healthcare industry for Englewood Hospital and Medical Center in Englewood, N.J. from 1955 to 1987; a 31 ½ year career. She became involved with Stephen Missionaries in New Jersey, and then upon retirement she moved to Miramar Beach, FL to build and enjoy her dream retirement home near her younger brother Bill and his wife June. She is survived by her older brother Henry George Piper, Sr. (Naples, FL), one niece Terri Lee Rockstead (Piper) (Sandestin, FL) and four nephews Henry George Piper, Jr. (Chagrin Falls, OH), William John Piper, Jr. (Chester, VA), Thomas Martin Piper (The Woodlands, TX) and Geoffrey Ian Piper (Seattle, WA). Her ashes will be committed during a private ceremony. Florence loved dogs, and bred, raised and showed many prize-winning boxers. These were her children and she adored them and shared them lovingly. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alaqua Animal Refuge, 914 Whitefield Road, Freeport, FL 32439 (850) 880-6399.
