In memory of
Durwood Lynn Lewis
1927-2018 Durwood Lynn Lewis passed away on May 10, 2018 at the age of 90. The "Captain" was born on the family ranch in Ridgeway, TX on November 30, 1927 to Lynn and Molisia Lewis. Along with his older sister Mel and younger brother Hoyt the family struggled through the Great Depression and Texas dust bowl conditions of the 1930's. They migrated to the City of San Fernando, CA in the late 1930's to start a new life. Unfortunately, Lynn Lewis developed pneumonia and died in 1938 leaving Molisia to raise her family. Durwood learned to drive at the age of 14 so that he could work and help provide for his family. In 1947 he graduated from San Fernando High School where he played football and ran track. He worked for Flying Tiger Cargo and Slick Airways after graduating. Durwood married Wanda Marie Marrs on February 2, 1951 before a small group of family and friends. Growing up in the same town, he had known Wanda since middle school and they remained married for 6 decades. A few days after their wedding, he left for Korea with the U.S. Army's 7th Cavalry. He saw action in Korea and later was stationed in Japan. He returned home in the summer of 1952 and they moved to a small home on Valley Street in Newhall, CA. They moved to Saugus in 1954 where they remained in the same home for the next 64 years. After the war, Durwood joined the San Fernando Fire Department and rose to the level of acting Chief. After the SF Department merged with the Los Angeles Fire Department he held the rank of Captain and retired in 1986. A lifelong outdoorsman, he hunted and fished from North America to Africa until his last days. He took his last buck in Colorado, on his favorite ranch, at the age of 86.He was a tough man with a soft side. Sometimes quick to temper, but always quick to cool, he was a good husband, father, and friend. He would say what was on his mind, stand with you, and not give up on you. Never a bore, he told a good story, and had many good friends. Durwood is survived by his wife Wanda; his sons: Thomas and wife Lois, Paul, Russell and wife Gina; a great group of grandchildren: Steven, Mark, Matthew, Alan, Kassandra, Kaitlyn, Tessa and Camille; an extended family of nieces, nephews, sisters and brothers-in law. "We will miss him all our days. Now, let's celebrate his long, big, life." Services will be held at 2:00pm Saturday, June 9, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church, 24317 N. Newhall Ave, Newhall, CA 91321 (661-296-0555). In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations may be made to your favorite charity.
