Rev. Donald McAllister
DOVER - Rev. Donald McAllister, 85, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2018 at St. Ann Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Born in Norway, Maine August 21, 1933 the son of Donald F. and Mildred (Oberg) McAllister. Father Don was a 1955 graduate of the University of Maine (studying his junior year at the University of Oslo, Norway), received MA at Tufts University in 1956, MS in American Literature at Columbia College, studied at University of Helsinki in Finland where he earned his PhD. He also earned a MS in clinical Psychology from Villanova University and a MS in Theology at Washington Theological Coalition. He had been a social studies teacher at Ellsworth (Maine) High School, later at Milo High School, and also had taught at Wilber Lynch High School in Amsterdam, N.Y. Father Don converted to Roman Catholicism in 1958 and was ordained into the priesthood with the Augustinian Fathers, on his birthday in 1971, in Amsterdam, N.Y. He had served as Chaplain at St. Mary Hospital in San Francisco, and at the Catherine McAuley Health Center and St. Joseph Mercy Hospital both in Ann Arbor, Mich., and also taught medical ethics at area medical and nursing schools in Michigan. He returned to Maine in 1988 and became Chaplain at Mercy Hospital in Portland and was formally welcomed as a member of the clergy of the Diocese of Portland in 1993 and retired in 2003. He came to Dover, N.H. and resided and assisted at St. Mary Church, and has served as Chaplain in Residence at St. Ann Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Dover (N.H.) for about 10 years. SERVICES: A Mass of Thanksgiving will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5 at the Parish of the Assumption, St. Mary Church, corner of Chestnut and Third Sts., Dover, N.H. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 12 noon Thursday, Sept. 6 at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 32 Paris St., Norway, Maine with Most Rev. Robert Deeley, JCD, Bishop of Portland as celebrant.
