In Loving Memory of Darrell E. Sledgister
Darrell E. Sledgister, of Sun City West, AZ, passed away on Saturday, July 21st surrounded by loved ones at Rock Creek Alzheimer's Special Care Center in Surprise, AZ. He was 84. The youngest son of Burke and Millie Taylor Sledgister, Darrell was born on October 30, 1933 in Chillicothe, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers: Andrew Sledgister of Chillicothe, IL, Harry (Arlene) Sledgister of Sun City, AZ, and Robert (Donna) Sledgister of Chillicothe, IL; brother-in-law, David (Betty) Bliss of Springfield, MO; grandson, Brian J. Sledgister of Pontiac, IL; step-daughter, Suzanne Yahraus of Wilmington, DE; and his first wife, Marilyn Bliss Sledgister, in 2005, after 53 years of marriage. A golf enthusiast, Darrell had a 44-year career at Caterpillar, Inc., beginning at age 18, unloading 100-lb. crates by hand on the loading docks, and retiring as Director of Human Resources. His integrity and outgoing personality are warmly remembered by all who knew him, especially the family he treasured. Darrell is survived by his beloved wife of ten years, Patricia A. Sledgister; his two sons, R. David Sledgister of Alexandria, VA, and Richard (Melody) Sledgister of Metamora, IL; brother-in-law, William G. Bliss of Washington, IL; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Also surviving are three of Patricia's children, who Darrell regarded as his own: Lynn J. (Lisa) Fisher of Gloucester Point, VA, Audrey (David) Votto of Phoenix, AZ, and son-in-law, Andrew (Teresa) Yahraus of Phoenix, AZ, as well as Patricia's nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
