Christopher J. Spollen Professor, Illustrator and Tinker Christopher Spollen passed away peacefully on Sept. 10, 2019. He left behind his wife, Jing Bao, and son, Yuhao Spollen, his sister, Anne Spollen and brother, Thomas Spollen. Professor Spollen has been a life-long resident of Staten Island. He attended Shirlee Solomon Public School 8, Elias Bernstein Intermediate School 7, was accepted into The High School of Art and Design, and then received a full scholarship to Parsons School Of Design NYC in 1971. He's also worked his way up from Cub Scout to the first Eagle Scout in Troop 167 of Christ Lutheran Church in Great Kills. Over the past 30 years in his role as an award-winning illustrator, Christopher was a pioneer in the field of graphic art and Illustration. Not only did he have his own home-built darkroom and a professional stat camera in his Dongan Hills home, but he was also one of the first to introduce the computer in 1990 into the world of illustration. With it being his specialization, Christopher devoted his passion and love for illustration to his established company, Moonlight Press Studio; after 30 years of entrepreneurship, as a result he was invited to come and teach his knowledge of art and computer to the students at The Fashion Institute of Technology , which continued for some 20 very joyful years as an Adjunct Associate Professor. Professor Spollen's work has won numerous awards and is featured in many permanent collections, including The New Britain Museum of Illustration, The Museum of American Illustration, The Norman Rockwell Museum, the US Air Force Art Program, and The Pentagon, etc. The professor also has had several exhibitions at the Staten Island Museum of his etchings, sculptures, mixed media prints, and his human-powered bike design - the Vee Bee. He's also published several books of his illustrations; the latest one, The Art of Recycling, is a 300 page full colored book of Professor Spollen's recent sculptures published in 2015. In June 2019, Professor Spollen showcased his Solo exhibition "Modeling the Future" at the Fashion Institute of Technology; and immediately after, pieces from the exhibition were picked by Bergdorf Goodman and displayed in Bergdorf Goodman 's 5 windows on 5th Avenue for the entire month of August 2019. The summer of 2019 had been the grand perfect finale for Christopher's passionate devotion for art. Aside from his passion and dedication for art, Christopher was also a loving husband and a caring father. He met his beloved wife, Jing Bao, in 2005, and August 20th of 2019 had marked the 10th year anniversary of their loving marriage. Viewing will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday at Hanley Funeral Home. The funeral service will start at 7 p.m. where a band of bagpipers will be playing two songs.
