In memory of
Kay Johnston Meyers
Kay Johnston Meyers April 9, 1941-December 27, 2020. Kay Meyers, age 79, passed away peacefully from complications of Alzheimer's Disease at Emerson House in Portland. Kay was born in Sacramento, California to Herbert and Georgia Johnston. Kay started playing the piano at a young age, and this talent would persist throughout her life and was one of her many artistic passions. She met her soon to be husband John Meyers on December 27, 1964 at the Greyhound bus station in Sacramento, and Kay and John were married July 23, 1965. After he completed his PharmD from UC San Francisco they traveled to Baltimore, Maryland, where John was stationed as a commissioned officer in the US Public Health Service having been awarded a coveted pharmacy residency. There Kay studied at American University in Washington, DC and they had their first daughter. With an infant and Old English Sheepdog puppy they drove across the country in a Porsche and settled in Fort Bragg, California. There John and Kay owned and managed Fort Bragg Pharmacy for 16 years. As their business grew, Kay branched out with her own stationery and gift shop and she managed the greeting cards for Harvest Market. Kay was active in Soroptimist International of Fort Bragg and traveled to Japan during her tenure as president. She supported local arts organizations and was active in school and sports activities with their two daughters Kimberly and Gabrielle. In 1991 she and John returned to Sacramento, where Kay completed her Bachelor's degree from Sacramento State University, before moving to Portland Oregon in 1999. While in Portland Kay worked as a substitute teacher, was active at the Multnomah Arts Center, traveled and worked many happy hours in her beautiful garden. Kay was quick to make friends, found joy in nature and was a proud wife, mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents. She will be deeply missed by her husband John, daughters Kim Meyers Word and Dr. Gabrielle Meyers, sister Georgia Perez, brother Herbert Johnston, grandchildren Rosalind and Emily Dorr, her extended family and the many cherished friends she gathered throughout her life. A Celebration of Life Service will occur at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
