Douglas John Romaine
Douglas John Romaine Dec. 11, 1938 - July 13, 2019 Douglas John Romaine passed away at age 80 from complications of pneumonia July 13, 2019 in Portland, following a long onset of Alzheimer's. Doug was born in Baker, Ore., in 1938, the son of Garret Romaine and Theresa Olson Romaine. He grew up in Haines, then relocated with his family to Eugene and graduated from Eugene High School class of 1957. He married Jean Prusia in 1962 and the following year graduated from Eastern Oregon University, in La Grande, Ore., with a bachelor's degree in Chemistry. He began his career at Borden Chemical followed by the Santa Barbra Water Department in 1966. He began his very successful career at Crown Zellerbach, later James River, at the end of 1969 in product development producing two patents and many dear friends. He retired in 1996 shortly before his marriage ended. He then married Janet Reir of Vancouver, Wash., in 1999. Doug was a great philosopher and loved to debate politics around a campfire with friends and family, with frequent laughter and a twinkle in his eyes. He was easy going and made friends with everyone who made his acquaintance. In his heart, his home remained in Eastern Oregon, where he made frequent trips with his family over the years exploring every nameless dirt road he could find with geology on the mind. Doug is survived by his son, John Romaine; daughter, Laura Wisdom; nephew, Garret Romaine; niece, Kris; as well as two grandson's and granddaughters; his widow, Janet Romaine; along with her children, Sean, Terra and Michelle. A memorial gathering for friends and family will be announced for the early summer of 2020 near Haines, Ore. Please sign the online guest book at www.oregonlive.com/obits
