In memory of
Betty L. Smith
Oct. 11, 1932 - May 15, 2019 On Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m., our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother ended her long battle with Alzheimer's. She entered Heaven's gate to be reunited with her husband, daughter, granddaughter, great-granddaughter, nine brothers and sisters, and many more relatives who have gone before her. She was 86 years old. She was born October 11, 1932 in Houston County, Alabama, the tenth and last child of Thomas James and Lula Mae Peters. She was also the last to depart this earth of those ten, and the seventh as the result of Alzheimer's. She graduated from Wicksburg High School and married her high school sweetheart, Ben Grady Smith, a marriage that lasted almost 65 years until his death in December 2015. They raised two children after moving to Panama City in 1954 following his discharge from the US Navy. A son, Bobby R. Smith, still resides at Deer Point Lake near Panama City with wife, Sarah E. Smith. A daughter, Linda Gail Ramsey, passed away in September 2018 after a 29 year battle with multiple sclerosis, in Tallahassee, Florida with her husband, Steve Ramsey faithfully by her side. She leaves two adoring granddaughters, Sandra Nix (husband Robert) of Chipley, Florida and Melissa Coogle (husband Tom) of Tallahassee, Florida. Another granddaughter, Amanda Ramsey, passed away in January 2018. She is also survived by great grandsons, Austin Rhodes (wife Alexandra) of Panama City, Brayden and Nathan Coogle of Tallahassee, and a beautiful great- granddaughter, Haylee Coogle of Tallahassee. Another great-granddaughter, Finlay Irene Ramsey was lost at birth in March of 2011. Other surviving grandchildren and great-grandchildren by marriage are Sharon Gillespie, Michael Bassett, Christina Hancock, Jayda Gillespie, Alek Nix and Brannon Nix. Betty retired from Bay District Schools as administrative secretary at Lucille Moore Elementary School where she worked for 30 years. She was known for her kind spirit and sharp wit, and people loved to be around her. Betty was a Christian and she and her husband were long-time members of St. Andrews Baptist Church in Panama City. Betty spent the last eight years in nursing facilities due to the onset of her Alzheimer's disease. A special thanks to Community Health and Rehab Center for 7 ½ years of wonderful care shown to Betty and to Blountstown Health and Rehab Center for their care since Hurricane Michael. She will be missed by many, but all can rejoice that she is now in a better place. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 20, 2019 in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Virgil Tillman officiating. Services will start at 2 p.m. with family receiving visitors 1 hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Evergreen Memorial Gardens following the service.
