In memory of
Alwin Rogers
Rogers, Alwin 3/29/1939 - 8/14/2019 Kent City Alwin Lee Rogers went to be with his Lord and Savior after losing his decade long battle with Alzheimer's disease on August 14, 2019. Al was born to Melvin and Evelyn Rogers on March 29, 1939 in Grand Rapids. He lived in Sparta until 1964 when he moved to Kent City, where he lived with his wife on the same 40 acres for 50 years. Al was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jack Rogers. He is survived by his wife, Joan; children, Paul & Rebeka Rogers, Cheryl and Tom Small, Neil & Sheri Rogers; siblings Marilyn and Jon Pike, Carolyn and Roger Hixon, Roy and Sharon Rogers; sister-in-law, Joan Rogers; grandchildren, Kylea, Micah, Keelan and Max Rogers as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Al was a deacon and Sunday school teacher for many years in Sparta. Al loved the Sparta area and people that lived there. He was one of the original investors and management of Meadowlark retirement facility. He also served on the Porter Hills foundation board of directors for many years. He bought Rogers Hardware from his father in 1967 where he worked from 7am until 6pm every day. If you wanted to find Al after 6pm, he could always be found hanging out with his pets, the Brahmas and Texas Longhorns he enjoyed so much. Al participated in the Sparta Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Development Authority for most of his professional career. Al looked forward to meeting and talking with his customers every day. He especially enjoyed meeting his friends and family for coffee at Cnossens bakery then later at Maxines restaurant for a mid-morning break. Al retired from the hardware in 2000. He and Joan enjoyed taking trips during the summer to Curtis, in the U.P. as well as to Florida for the winters. Al's family would like to thank everyone at Porter Hills for their continued support and care for the family as well as Al. Special thanks go out to Pastor CJ Dendulk, the Director of Nursing, Traci Potter, his doctors, the nursing staff, the shahbazim, Emmanuel Hospice, and all the friends, family and employees at Porter Hills - Cook Valley and the Green House Homes. It was comforting for the family to leave him in your hands every day as we know that you loved him like we did. Visitation will be on Friday, August 16, 2019 from 5 to 7pm and Saturday, August 17, 2019 from 12-1pm at Trinity Christian Reformed Church in Sparta. The funeral will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2019 starting at 1PM. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Sparta. A luncheon will immediately follow the services at the church.
