Alan Glengyle Deale DD Aug. 7, 1927 - Jan. 29, 2018 Alan Deale, Minister Emeritus, First Unitarian Church of Portland, died at home at Charleston Lake Ontario, Canada. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Hunter; and by his daughter, Dr. Cynthia Deale (Robert O'Halloran) and her children, Kaitlin Brown (Nathan), Alexandra Watson (Zackary) and Zachary; by his son, Alan Patterson Deale (Laurie) and their son, Nicholas and Daniel Glengyle Deale and his son, Ian. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Lara Payne (Trenton), Deirdre Mac Kay (Shane) and her children, Alexander and Duncan and by Charles Corlett (Kari Abrams) and his children, Leah and Rebecca. He was predeceased by his former wife, Dr. Shirley Patterson Deale; and by his late wives, the Rev. Marguerite Hessler-Deale and Dr. Leola Lorenzen; and his daughter-in-law, Cyd Swanson. Alan Deale was minister of First Unitarian Church of Portland from 1970 to 1991. He was active in many social justice causes including Death with Dignity, the Memorial Society and the American Indian Movement. He preached frequently on related issues such as a womans right to choose and served on many boards including NARAL and The Police Review Board. He wanted the church to be active and involved in downtown Portland so he encouraged the church to buy more real estate with the result the church has a whole city block which includes The Outside In. He previously served churches in Hubbardston, Mass., Fairhaven, Mass., and Rockford, Ill. While serving the church in Rockford, he marched on the last day of the Selma March and was close to the podium at the I Have a Dream speech. Alan was a graduate of Hardwick Academy, Hardwick, Vt. and of the University of New Hampshire and of Harvard Divinity School. He remembered with pleasure his year at Oxford as well. He served in both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force. He was a true Renaissance man and had many eclectic interests including planes, cars, boats, art, architecture and music. He was very proud of the music program at his churches. His service will be held at at 2 p.m., Feb. 24, 2018, at the Unitarian Church of Rockford Ill. A live feed will be available at that time.
