McPHAIL, Stuart Alexander July 24, 1926 – October 10, 2016 Stuart Alexander McPhail passed away peacefully at the age of 90 years. Stuart was born in Melville, Saskatchewan and moved to Calgary in 1930. He spent his school years at Balmoral Elementary/Jr. High School and Crescent Heights High School. He was enlisted in the Royal Canadian Naval Reserves from January 1944 to December 1945. Stuart married Mary Kathleen Pelling on April 10, 1948 who he met at age 15 while attending Balmoral Jr. High, and they went on to have four children together. Stuart had a long career in the insurance industry, working in his early career days with the Fire Insurance Company of Canada, and later with Western Union Insurance Company as a claims adjuster. He was also active in both the Alberta Association of Insurance Adjusters and the Canadian Insurance Claims Manager Association. Towards the end of his career he worked as a licensed independent claims adjuster specializing in fire insurance for multi occupancy dwellings and small businesses. During the years of raising his family, Stuart was active as a volunteer for the Highwood Community association, and an Elder at Chalmers Presbyterian Church. After retirement Stuart and Mary moved to Dana Village where he became a member of the condominium Board of Directors, and lived until the death of Mary, his dear wife of 67 years. His last year of life was spent at the United Active Assisted Living Community at Fish Creek, where he received wonderful care and support. Stuart was predeceased by his son Glen McPhail, his wife Mary McPhail as well as his bother Donald, and parents Alexander and Eliza McPhail. He is survived by daughter Laurie Scheuerman and Rod (Monica and Chris, Teresa and Derick), daughter Colleen Harris and Bill (Nicholas, Greg), son Mark McPhail and Gail (Kyle, Taryn), daughter-in-law Jane McPhail (Matt and Saskia, Blair) as well as his great- grandchildren: Isabelle, Lauren, Leo, Maru and Ellie. At Stuart's request there will be no public funeral service. A private celebration of his life will be held by the family at a later date. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the nursing and medical staff on Unit 71 at Rockyview Hospital, Southwood Hospice, and the wonderful caring community at Fishcreek Assisted Living.
