SMYTH, Lt. Cmdr. Richard Charles Widenham; PEng, R.N., R.N.Z.N. June 23, 1927 - February 10, 2017 It is with sadness, yet a great sense of relief that we say good bye to our friend, father, husband, grandfather and great-grandfather Richard Charles Widenham Smyth. Richard passed away peacefully in Bantry Hospital, Co. Cork, Ireland on Friday February 10, 2017 with wife Brigid and eldest son Noel by his side. An officer in the Royal Navy 1945-1962 and The Royal New Zealand Navy 1956-1959, David-Browns in Huddersfield 1962-1964, he also worked for the "new" BCIT 1965 until 1985. Richard loved sailing and was a founding member of the BC Mirror Dinghy Association. His volunteerism extended to the People's Warden at Christ Church Cathedral (Vancouver) during the development of Cathedral Square. Richard and Brigid moved to Co. Cork, Ireland in 1996 eventually settling in the coastal village of Leap. He was instrumental in the renovations of the 405 year old St. Fachtna's Cathedral in Rosscarbery. A memorial service will be held in the spring at St. Fachtna's, Rosscarbery, to be followed by interment at St. Mary's, Castletownroche. We are thankful for the time he shared with us and glad that he is now at rest in peace!
