In memory of
Norma Helen SYMONS (nee McELLIGOTT) 91, Aurora, Ontario It is with deep sorrow that we announce the sudden but peaceful passage of our beloved Mother, Norma, at Southlake Hospital the morning of February 13, 2017 with her daughter Karen by her side. Norma grew up in Lachine, Quebec, one of five daughters: survived by her sister Irene and predeceased by Kay, Margaret and Joyce, born to Albert and Annie McElligott (deceased). Norma married Gerald Gordon Symons (deceased 2012) and became the mother of 6: Alan, Bob, Kirk, Doug, Karen and Elizabeth. Grandmother of 24 and great-grandmother of 9. Beloved aunt, great-aunt and cousin to the Cleaver, Maloney, Stott, Woolley, Armistead, McElligott and Symons clans. Norma was a woman of great strength, character, warmth and love. She began her working life as a draft person at Dominion Engineering (was too young yet to begin Nursing). She went on to become a nurse, working night shifts while the mother of two young boys. With 6 kids at home she challenged herself to learn to golf and curl, making precious friendships that lasted her whole life. Along the way she had 3 holes in one in her 70s and two 8 enders in curling. Her love of sports endured to the end and her favourite memory was of her trip to Russia for the '72 series of hockey, Canada versus Russia. If there was a significant sports event, you could be sure she was glued to her TV to watch. Mom's last 5 years were spent at the Hollandview Trail Retirement home in Aurora. There she met new friends to whom we are very grateful. Mary, Ronnie, and Irene you were her "girls". Her spirit was reignited after suffering the loss of so many of her childhood and lifelong friends. Visitation will take place Friday, February 17th at the Thompson Funeral Home, 530 Industrial Parkway South, Aurora, Ontario between the hours of 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held at Trinity Anglican Church, (79 Victoria St., Aurora) on Saturday, February 18th at 1 p.m. Reception and refreshments to follow at the Church. Interment will take place Monday, February 20th at 11 a.m. Lakeview Memorial Gardens, 701 Donegani, Pointe Claire, in Quebec where she will rest next to her parents and sister Kay and family. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and the rains fall soft upon your fields, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand. www.thompsonfh-aurora.com
