ZELAZO, Monica (Mony) July 20, 1964 ~ October 11, 2016 Beloved daughter, sister, auntie, niece, mother, grandmother and friend. Monica was the second of four daughters born to George and Elsie Zelazo. Mony was born and raised in Calgary and worked here as a bookkeeper, small business owner and award- winning photographer. Mony was a woman of talent and character; there was no task big or small she couldn't master once she put her mind to it. She inspired everyone with her gifts for hostessing, party planning, decorating and landscape artistry. She could be a chef for a gourmet banquet or a home cook for simple comfort food. She had an eye for detail and design, a sharp memory and a powerful intuition. Monica had a great sense of humor and irony. She had quick wit and while never taking herself too seriously, she would always pour her heart and soul into everything she did. In recent years she found peace and enlightenment by practicing yoga. She formed a special bond with her fellow "shishya" who lovingly referred to her as "Guru at the Top of The Mountain". Her greatest sources of joy were her family and her garden. She raised Jessica and Adam with limited means but found ways to make sure they had every opportunity and comfort they could dream of. This sometimes came at great personal sacrifice but you never heard Mony complain about it. Monica spent countless hours caring for the flowers, shrubs, bushes and trees of her garden. "Granny" would invite her grandbabies to join her, showing them how to pet the furry bumblebees and how to find and pick the weeds. She will be remembered and honored for being easy to please, optimistic, encouraging, always outspoken but kind and gentle to all people and all living things. She kept her heart and home open to anyone in need. Ever the altruist, Mony would give you the shirt off her back and her last penny if you needed it. To her friends and family she was our rock, soft place to land, listening ear, voice of reason, solution finder, miracle worker and granter of wishes. All at once a perfectionist, potty mouth, homebody and the life of the party. Monica was taken from us after a painful battle with cancer. She passed away so peacefully, surrounded with love and her sisters at her side. Though her time on Earth was much too short, she made it a better place. Loved ones left to carry on Monica's legacy are her mother Elsie, sisters Debbi (Mario), Michele (William) and Christine (Wade), children Jessica (Taylor) and Adam, grandchildren Georgiana and Violette; nieces Shelby and Savanah, and nephew Talbot. Monica was predeceased by her dad, George Zelazo. A Celebration of Monica's Life will be held in the Chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. A light lunch and refreshments will be served after the memorial service. All guests are invited to stay and share their favourite stories and memories of Monica. In keeping with Mony's nature, please feel free to wear comfortable and uplifting colourful clothing. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial donations in memory of Monica to the Alberta Children's Hospital. To express condolences, please visit:
