In memory of
Heather Douglas Elizabeth Hilliard
Our mum is gone. She died peacefully in her sleep on January 12, 2017 in Victoria, B.C. at the age of 89. She was generous, adventurous, fiercely determined (sometimes difficult), and so well loved. Her dinner parties were legendary, as was her paucity of driving skills; always willing to set another place at her table and always willing to defend her unique perspective behind the wheel. She was a force of nature, a beautiful one. Born to Florence Patricia O'Carroll Darby and Capt. James Douglas (Chummy) Prentice (RN and RCN), she grew up in 1930's Victoria spending summers in the Chilcoltin where her father managed the Gang Ranch. Mum attended the University of Toronto graduating with a degree in Occupational Therapy in 1948. She married the great love of her life, Lt. Geoffrey (Geoff) Strickland Hilliard (RCN) in 1950. Posted to Halifax N.S. they soon produced five kids before the first had turned six...no twins. Reposted to Victoria, our adventurous parents loaded up the VW van with five kids, two dogs and a cat, and camped their way across the country...no seat belts. Having a husband at sea, working as an OT and raising five kids didn't stop our mother from living her life with style. She pursued her interests with passion: she cooked with flare, sewed furiously, could knit anything blindfolded, haunted auctions, reupholstered furniture, silk screened Christmas cards and threw amazing parties. When Dad retired our parents sold up and headed to Europe where they bought Sophia, a 60 ft. Dutch lemsteraak built in 1918. With plenty of room for family and friends they spent five happy years cruising the coasts and canals of Europe. Dad died suddenly in Malta in 1977. Mum was devastated. She returned to Victoria determined to remake her life. She worked, traveled and sailed, and was even shipwrecked in the Bahamas. In 1985 Mum met and later married Kenneth (Ken) Herbert Faris, a talented local artist. "Beauty and Her Beast" (above) was painted by Ken. They spent 13 years on Chesterman Beach where they created a haven replete with guest cottage, art studio, boogey boards, beach fires, kids, dogs, cats, Granny's brownies and riotous dinner parties. They returned to Victoria in 2007 and set up house in a condo with breathtaking views. Ken died on Sept. 8, 2016. Our mother was an extraordinary woman who loved nothing better than to surround herself with good food and company, great style and art, and a dog or two for good measure. She had a good life and a good line or two..."Get a riggle on!" and "Last one out the door gets the kids!" will forever live on in our family's lexicon. Mum leaves her five children: Robin (George), Andrew (Ineke), Jonathan (Jan), Sarah (Jim) and Martha (Chris); her six grandchildren: Ben (Emma), Elea (Pol), Geoffrey, Anna, Hugh and Lucy; her brother Dr. James (Jim) Prentice (Alison) and family; Ken's family: daughters Lynn Wilson (Blair) and Heather Faris (Jeff) and grandchildren: Tessa, Bennett and Owen. We'd also like to thank Mum's caregivers: Jenelle Fuentebilla, Rachana Shrestha, Dr. Ted Rosenberg and his team. We have the utmost gratitude and respect for their outstanding care, without which Mum could not have remained at home in her last year. We invite friends to join us for a tribute on Saturday April 1, 2017. Please come share some memories and help celebrate Mum's life.
