CARMELA MUZZI On October 9, 2016, in her home at the age of 84. Will be remembered forever by her children Bruno and Rosemary, son-in-law Neil and the star of the family, her granddaughter Madeline, to whom she was a cherished nonna. Lovingly remembered by her sisters Rita, Sara, Maria and Filomena and by many nieces, nephews and dear friends in Canada and in Italy. Carmela Papallo was born at home in Serra San Bruno, in the mountains of southern Italy on January 12, 1932. As a young woman, Carmela chose to make her own life in a new country together with her husband Francesco. She raised her young family amongst her paesani in the diverse community of people who chose to live in the urban communities of Toronto in the 60s and 70s. Carmela embraced her life in Toronto teaching herself how to live and work in an English- speaking society. She made new connections wherever she went and valued all of her friendships. Anyone who met her immediately recognized her obvious intelligence as well as the strength of her kindness and compassion. Carmela was a modern open-minded woman who easily connected with the ideals of our Canadian society and actively participated in it. Throughout her life Carmela would return to Italy where the years would slip off her as she navigated the cobbled streets of that antique town to once again share in the company of her parenti. Carmela lived each part of her life well: daughter, sister, friend, wife, Italian, mother, nonna and Canadian. The arc of her life took her from that 900 year-old mountain town in southern Italy to a life well lived, in the place of her choosing - the thoroughly modern city of Toronto. We think she would be happy to be remembered for her example of how to live a life of compassion, kindness and strength. Family and friends are welcomed to the Bernardo Funeral Homes (2960 Dufferin St., south of Lawrence Ave. W.), on Friday from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Charles Borromeo Church (811 Lawrence Ave. W., at Dufferin St.), on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 10 a.m. Entombment will follow at Westminster Cemetery (5830 Bathrust St., north of Finch Ave.). In memory of Carmela, donations may be made to your charity of choice.
