In memory of

In memory of
Betty M. Chater
Betty Muriel Chater (nee Spiller), our mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2017 after a long and painful illness. Mom now gets her greatest wish, to join her beloved husband Garry. Mom was predeceased by her parents John and Hester, her sisters Aileen, Jean and brother Jack, her husband Garry and grandson Coel. Mom is survived by her children Dave (Val), Chris (Lucha), Tim (Jennine), Michael (Helma), and her grandchildren Heidi Chater, Sean Chater, Sara Chater, Kevin Chater, Andrea DeMan, Taylor (Jesse) Blackstock, Mark (Amber) Merrick, Jacqui (Stuart) Avery and Laurie (Kiel) Yablonski. Also, Mom had ten great-grandchildren and one great, great-grandchild. She loved kids and especially babies! She also leaves to mourn, her nephew Bill Baker, nieces Laura Spiller, Anne (Ken) Mathie, Kathie Mikkelsen, Barbara (Tony) Klymchuk, Patricia and Melanie Baylis, Jennifer(David) Lazarz and her dearest sister-in-law Avery Worrall (nee Chater). Mom was born in Calgary, Alberta but moved to Victoria in her early teens where she enrolled at Mount View High School and met her first friend- Avery. They were best friends which then led to Mom meeting her future husband and soul mate- Garry Chater. Mom's life centered around her family, faith, friends, community and caring for others. It was no surprise that Mom followed her dream to become a Registered Nurse. She graduated in 1950 from the Royal Jubilee Hospital School of Nursing and worked for many years in the emergency department at RJH. She loved her profession and everything that it is and stands for: "Not for ourselves, but others." One of Mom's legacies was working with the Alumnae of the RJH School of Nursing to save and restore the Pemberton Memorial Chapel and Gardens at the hospital. A truly remarkable feat by a dedicated, persistent and visionary group of nurses! The Church was an integral part of Mom's life and between her and Dad they were heavily involved in All Saints Anglican Church (View Royal) and Camp Columbia for over 50 years. There was probably not one job or function that Mom (and Dad) were not involved with at All Saints. Mom was a gracious, polite, social and thoughtful person with all whom she met. She loved singing in the church and community choirs. She also loved her regular ladies monthly lunch group, dinner parties, dances, world travel and was also a wine connoisseur (even offering to critique Dad's home-made wine experiments!). The family would like to thank Doctors Ted Rosenberg and Filipe Edora plus the nurses and caregivers at both Sunrise Senior Living and The Heights at Mount View for all the compassionate and excellent care Mom received over the past 9 years while living at these homes. A memorial service and Celebration of Life will be held for Mom on Thursday March 2, 2017 at 1:00pm at Christ Church Cathedral, Victoria. A reception will follow in the Chapel of the New Jerusalem upstairs at the Cathedral. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, our family requests that any donations be made to The Pemberton Memorial Chapel, c/o Victoria Hospitals Foundation, 1952 Bay Street, Wilson Block, Victoria, BC V8R 1J8 or the Alzheimer Society of BC ( www.alzheimer.ca/en/bc . ) ...
