Marilyn Ruth Howard
Marilyn Ruth Howard, long time resident of Dawson Creek, British Columbia was born on October 19, 1944 in Toronto, Ontario and passed away Monday, December 21, 2020 in Fort St. John, British Columbia at the age of 76 years. She moved with her family to the BC Lower Mainland in 1954 where they settled in North Surrey. Marilyn completed her schooling there, graduating from Queen Elizabeth Senior Secondary in 1962. Marilyn worked for a year after high school and then attended Western Washington University in Bellingham for 2 years in the faculty of education. She subsequently moved back to Toronto – on her own – in 1965 and got her teaching degree. She then taught elementary school in Toronto until moving back to BC in 1972 and settling in Dawson Creek in 1975. Marilyn did substitute teaching in the South Peace and education upgrading at the Nawican Friendship Centre until the late 1970's when she co-founded the Mirror newspaper. She worked at the Mirror as editor, local reporter, and editorial writer until the Mirror was taken over by the Peace River Block News circa 1995. The last fifteen years of Marilyn's work life was spent in her "dream job" as the Tourism Coordinator for the City of Dawson Creek until her retirement in 2010. Marilyn also served 1 term on City Council in 1991-1992. Marilyn was known to all as a genuinely kind, friendly and knowledgeable person who loved sharing time and stories with others. Marilyn was predeceased by her mother Elsie (1988) and father Roy (2010) and is survived by her beloved daughter Shannon Asencio (Danny) in Ottawa, brother Don Howard (Pat) in Dawson Creek, nephew Sam Howard (Dariel) in Taiwan, niece Sara Howard in Castlegar; great nephews James, Ethan, and Nathaniel; step-nephews Jack Walsh (Jacqui) and Dean Walsh and families; lifelong friends the Eggertson and Hansen families; special cousin Robert Spinks (Sadie), and numerous cousins and friends in both BC and Ontario. With respect to Marilyn's wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. Very Respectfully Reynars Funeral Home & Crematorium
