In memory of
PALENSKE, Arnold December 20, 1923 – January 27, 2017 After spending his early years in southern California, Arnold was a naval aviator, party chief, design engineer, international exploration manager and geophysicist. He was one of the original "doodlebuggers" who made his circuitous way to Canada with his family in the 1950s. They then lived in Australia for many years. After returning to Canada, multiple consulting assignments continued to take him to remote and challenging regions of the globe. He was an itinerant adventurer, a consummate gentleman and raconteur. He loved opera, classical music, animals, his friends and colleagues around the world, and above all, his family. Arnold was an iconic, bigger than life presence. He had a wonderful dry sense of humour and a razor sharp intellect. Throughout his 93 years, he didn't ever do anything that was expected or traditional – he was spontaneous and charismatic, with a strong sense of right and wrong. If there was an opportunity for adventure, no matter how small, he packed up the family without much notice and together, they experienced the world in a very different way. He had an incredible bond with his children, Janet and Bruce, and treasured his granddaughters "Rala", whom he helped to raise, and "Keiko" in Hawaii. He was very fond of his daughter- in-law, Laurie, and a kindred spirit to his grandson-in-law, Jason. He was so pleased to have two and a half years with his great- granddaughter, the "remarkable Olive". He is now reunited with his "Chook" and is experiencing yet another extraordinary adventure. Arnold will be missed terribly, but his family and all those whose lives he touched are inspired to live life with enthusiasm, adventure and kindness, and to take the path less travelled. Arnold was predeceased by his beloved wife, Jean. He is survived by his children, Janet and Bruce (Laurie); granddaughters Lara (Jason) and Celine; great-granddaughter, Olive; and fur family members, Monty and Nancy.
