Edwin (Ted) Skene
Edwin (Ted) Skene November 17, 1927 - February 7, 2017 Edwin George "Ted" Skene Proud Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather. Ted died February 7th, 2017 following a short illness, with his family at his side. Ted was born November 27th, 1927 in the family house on the "Quinton" farm near Balcarres, the oldest child of Scottish immigrants Alfred and Lotta Bell. Ted attended the Red Rows one room country school. He moved to the new family farm at the age of 5, where he later began his own farming career, and lived for the next 80 years. He married Anna Joyce Brockelbank on December 7, 1954. Together on the farm they raised 3 children. He was predeceased by his wife on September 7, 1998, and his sister Elspeth Jean on October 9th, 2015. He is survived by his children Bev of Regina; Dave (Donna) of Regina; and Jim (Memori) of Roblin, Manitoba, as well as grandchildren Megan, Carter (Ashlee); Adam (Danika) and Madison, and Great Grandchildren Tylan, Kayson and Jake Skene. Ted was a registered seed grower for 56 years from 1956 to his retirement in 2012. In 1985 he was recognized by the Canadian Seed Growers Association with a Long Service certificate. He served as a volunteer weather observer for Environment and Climate Change Canada from August 1, 1961 until March 19, 2010, recording and reporting daily weather conditions as well as extreme weather. Ted was a longstanding board member and treasurer of St. Andrews United Church in Balcarres. Ted loved visiting, chatting, and storytelling. He was witty with a keen sense of humour. He was always willing to help anyone and will be missed by those who knew him. In lieu of a funeral at this time friends will be welcome to attend a summer celebration of his life at the Balcarres cemetery.
